The difference between working predominantly with the mind as a healing modality and the body is that:

The Mind: Witnesses the physical experience
The Body: Is having the experience and feeling it from the inside out.

Working with the felt sense supports you in becoming more aware, of usual unconscious personal shaping. When you notice how you are moving in the world, and then practice different ways of being.
You experience having more choices. Choosing differently allows for embodiment, and embodiment supports long-lasting change.

For many of us, many of our day-to-day actions are governed by subconscious attempts to avoid feeling our feelings. Something that makes total sense when so many people’s early life environmental conditions varied enormously in their ability to support and
encourage the expression of raw, real, and authentic emotions.

Signaling to you, that it’s not safe to feel your emotions

In response, you, like others, may have compensated by disconnecting from your physical sensations (a key signal that something is arising for you) and unknowingly created mechanisms that appear constructive, in efforts to protect you.


Examples include:

Responding to anxiety through a dependence on being busy
Internalising anger, through habitual smiling, laughter, and niceness
Avoiding confrontation by becoming a people-pleaser

What is Somatic Experiencing®?

Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented therapeutic model based on a multidisciplinary intersection of physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine and it has been clinically applied with profound results for more than four decades.

Somatic Experiencing® aims to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in your body and nervous system. Trauma, from an SE lens, is focused on how it shows up in the nervous system and how that dysregulation impacts your life. When we are stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze, SE empowers you with tools to build your capacity to release, recover, and become more resilient. So that vitality, ease, and a sense of aliveness can flow with more ease.

This resilience occurs by releasing traumatic shock through pendulating between the sympathetic NS (the arousal that occurs in fight, flight, and/or freeze) and the parasympathetic NS (the calming, settling, sensations you feel when you relax). Doing so helps you complete a trauma response. Allowing for the arousal to be integrated in a softer, way without overwhelming your system leading to re-traumatisation. This helps these aspects to soften their power over you because the emotional experience has been given empathetic space to be processed.
